DeLand, Fla. ? Leah McIntosh earned her first win of the season to lead the UAlbany softball team to an 8-0 non-conference win over Maine in the first game of the 2008 season at the Stetson Invitational at Patricia Wilson Field. The Great Danes, who defeated the Black Bears in five innings, later dropped a 10-6 decision to Western Michigan in extra innings to earn the split on the first day of play.
UAlbany (1-1) posted a six-run first inning against Maine (0-6), led by a two-RBI double by sophomore catcher Kat Smith. Senior first baseman Leanne Tillman and freshman third baseman Kristine Bill also recorded an RBI in the inning. McIntosh allowed a single to the first batter faced, but struck out the next seven Maine hitters.
The Great Danes added two more runs in the fourth inning. Bill recorded her second hit of the day, and later scored on an illegal pitch. Centerfielder Nicole Kothe knocked out an RBI single to score Amber Maisonet, who was hit by a pitch to reach base. McIntosh was able to keep the Black Bears' hitters silent, giving the Great Danes the win by way of the 8-run rule in the fifth inning. McIntosh finished with ten strikeouts and allowed just two hits in the shutout.
UAlbany started the game against Western Michigan with a four-run first inning, with a lead-off single by Maisonet. Maisonet and Michelle Connors completed a double steal for the Great Danes, and both were driven home on a single by right fielder Meagan Butsch. Designated player Bailey Van Deest drove in the final two runs of the inning on a triple to right field, sending Butsch and Gina Mason across the plate.
Western Michigan (4-2) cut the deficit in half in the top of the second inning, as shortstop Mandi Sayres and third baseman Sarah Thomas recorded RBI singles for the Broncos. Western Michigan then tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth as Sayres doubled to right field to score Michelle Bendewald, and later scored a run of her own on a throwing error by UAlbany pitcher Marissa Powell.
The Great Danes regained a one-run lead in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Kothe that scored pinch-runner Tara Dalton. The Broncos recorded single runs in each of the next two innings to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth, but UAlbany forced extra innings by tying the game with an RBI single up the middle by Maisonet.
Western Michigan scored four runs in the top of the eighth, led by Sayres, who finished 2-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI. The Broncos followed with three straight singles before first baseman Amanda Gelder doubled to right field, sending two runs home. Kyla Sullivan held off the Great Danes in the bottom of the frame, and the Broncos turned a double play to end the inning and claim the win.
Powell struck out three and allowed just two walks in a complete-game performance. Sullivan fanned six UAlbany batters, walking two and allowing five earned runs in eight innings.
The Great Danes continue play at the Stetson Invitational on Saturday, facing off against Western Michigan at 1:30 p.m. and the host Hatters at 6:30 p.m.
