West Hartford, Conn. ? Steve Wyland lined a two-run double to drive in the go-ahead runs in the ninth inning in leading UAlbany to a 7-3 come-from-behind victory over Hartford in America East Conference play on Friday afternoon at Campus Field. The four-game weekend series continues on Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader.
UAlbany (19-21, AE 6-7) reversed a 2-1 deficit with a six-run uprising in the ninth. Leo Corvino started the two-out rally with a run-scoring single that tied the contest. Wyland, a senior third baseman, then plated two runners with a double down the left-field line off reliever Ben Sobocinski for a 4-2 lead. Steve Sayre added a two-run single to center field, before catcher Chris Wood scored another run with a bases-loaded walk.
The Great Danes, who have won five of their last seven outings, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Center fielder Dave West, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, led off with a single and later came across when Sayre walked with the bases full for his third RBI of the day. Hartford (10-29, AE 6-10) went ahead in the eighth. Shortstop Brady Stouffer was hit by a pitch and Greg Cinelli doubled. Sobocinski chased both runners home with a triple into the right-field gap.
UAlbany starter John Naples went 7.1 innings on the mound. He struck out six and walked none in the no-decision effort. Reliever Alexander Beaulieu picked up the win, while Sean Gregory retired both Hartford batters he faced to earn his second save of the season. Sayre, a first baseman, and designated hitter Tom Hill each collected two hits. Kyle Perry had a pair of doubles for the Hawks, who have dropped six of their last seven.
