Orono, Maine - Senior hurler Casey Halloran earned a complete-game shutout win in game one and took the mound for a save in game two, leading UAlbany to a doubleheader sweep of Maine in America East Conference softball action on Saturday, April 28 at Alfond Stadium. The Great Danes won 5-0 in the early game and held off a seventh-inning rally by the Black Bears for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Halloran fanned ten, while allowing three hits across seven innings for UAlbany to earn her 14th win of the season. The Great Danes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second frame when sophomore shortstop Meagan Butsch, who reached base on a double, scored on a throwing error by Maine second baseman Ashley Waters.
UAlbany (26-13, AE 9-7) posted another four runs in the fifth inning, as the Great Danes loaded the bases early in the frame. Left fielder Amber Maisonet, centerfielder Nicole Kothe and second baseman Michelle Connors knocked out consecutive RBI singles, while senior third baseman Kelly Ogden recorded a sacrifice fly to drive in the final run.
In the nightcap, the Great Danes held a 4-0 lead going into the final inning, before Maine (21-25, AE 6-10) would rally for three runs in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple by Waters and a two-run homer by shortstop Kristen Calvetti. Halloran was able to conserve the win for UAlbany, however, striking out the final two Maine batters.
Ogden finished 2-for-3, including a triple, with one run scored and two RBI. The Great Danes racked up nine hits in the game. Freshman Christine McGivney recorded a complete game performance for the Black Bears, fanning three and allowing two walks.
The teams wrap up the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 11 a.m.
