Vestal, N.Y. ? Freshman Michelle Connors (Shenendehowa) finished with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI as UAlbany swept America East Conference opponent Binghamton in a softball doubleheader at East Gym Field on Saturday afternoon. The Great Danes won the first game 8-5, while claiming the second by a 4-2 margin.
UAlbany (20-11, AE 5-5) took control of game one by posting six runs in the fourth inning. First baseman Leanne Tillman led off the inning with a double to centerfield. Later in the inning, freshman Nicole Kothe recorded a double of her own to drive in three runs. Connors knocked a double of her own in the next at bat, while senior Kelly Ogden knocked her eighth home run of the season over the left field fence to score two more runs.
Binghamton (4-21, AE 1-9) responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, but the Great Danes tacked on another insurance run in the top of the sixth to seal the win. Freshman right-hander Leah McIntosh tossed a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing just two earned runs.
Senior Casey Halloran (Columbia) followed with a complete-game performance of her own in the nightcap, fanning 13 Bearcats batters while allowing three hits across seven innings. Halloran's performance was backed up by the UAlbany offense, which took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Conners crossed home plate on an error by Binghamton shortstop Sandy Meadows, while Ogden scored on a sacrifice fly by Tillman. Meagan Butsch, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch by sophomore hurler Jessica Whitaker.
The Great Danes added an insurance run in the top of the seventh frame as Shane Pais, who pinch-ran for catcher Kat Smith, scored on a Binghamton error. Smith recorded two hits in the game to lead UAlbany.
Binghamton right fielder Sara Eppolito and third baseman Meghan Quinn each recorded one hit, one run scored and one RBI for the Bearcats. Whitaker tossed a complete game for Binghamton, fanning one while allowing no walks.
