Softball Sweeps Army

Hammond tallies 400 career strikeouts.

SHORT STORY: Led by a strong team showing in the batter's box, the Great Danes swept Army in a midweek doubleheader, Tuesday.

GAME ONE

KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Morgan Petty and senior Jordan Nastos led with two hits from three at bats each.
  • Sophomore Kasey Conn added two runs.
  • Six different Great Danes tallied an RBI.
  • Conn and sophomore Deanna Grahek each hit a double while Petty added a homer.
  • Graduate student Wendi Hammond pitched a complete game with six strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Black Knights opened with a run in the first inning.
  • Wendi Hammond ended the top of the first with her 400th career strikeout, the first of the game.
  • UAlbany answered with a home run from Morgan Petty to tie the score.
  • After sophomore Sara Anderson walked, Deanna Grahek and Kasey Conn hit back-to-back doubles to give the Great Danes a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
  • Before the end of the inning, UAlbany added a fourth run with an RBI from graduate student Caitlyn Mitros.
  • With a sacrifice fly from freshman Mary Kate Murray, the Great Danes earned a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning.
  • Army closed the score gap with two runs, including a solo home run, in the top of the fourth.
  • Jordan Nastos and Anderson opened UAlbany's time at the plate with two consecutive singles.
  • Earning an RBI, redshirt-junior Victoria Vilarchao hit a single up the middle to advance the baserunners two bases each.
  • After attempting a double steal, the Black Knights tagged Anderson out at home but Conn took advantage of a field error and gave the Great Danes a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Conn's run proved to be the final one of the game and UAlbany earned the game-one win in one hour and 38 minutes.

KEY STATS
  • Morgan Petty led with two hits. Four Great Danes added one hit each.
  • Sara Anderson hit the only extra-base hit for UAlbany in the second game.
  • Eight Great Danes contributed to the stat line with at least one run, one hit, or one RBI.
  • Redshirt-junior Kate Powers pitched a complete game with four strikeouts. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Black Knights opened the contest with a run in the first inning.
  • Sara Anderson hit a double for the Great Danes first hit of game two in the bottom of the third.
  • Army added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead with two innings remaining.
  • Quickly making their way through the top of the sixth with three consecutive outs, the Great Danes went on a two-out rally to close the score gap.
  • With two outs on the board, Morgan Petty hit a single and Mary Kate Murray walked. 
  • Graduate student Maddi Petrella and Vilarchao hit two consecutive singles into the outfield to send two runs home and make it a one-run game with one inning remaining.
  • The Great Dane defense left one Black Knight on base before returning to the dugout.
  • Once again, a two-out rally proved successful for UAlbany.
  • After Wendi Hammond pinch hit to get on base with four balls, Caitlyn Mitros added a single for two baserunners.
  • Petty tied the score with an RBI single to right field. 
  • Murray tallied what proved to be the final RBI of the game as Mitros ran home for the Great Dane win, 4-3.
 
NEXT: UAlbany continues at home with a doubleheader against CCSU on Thursday (April 25).
