Softball Starts America East Action with Doubleheader Sweep

SHORT STORY: Consistent pitching and hot bats were the name of the game in the conference opening doubleheader victory at Maine, Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany started hot with singles from Caityn Mitros and Morgan Petty.
  • Maine held off the first-inning advance and left three Great Danes on base.
  • After a Black Bear single, the UAlbany defense turned a double play to end the first in just three batters.
  • After loading the bases in the top of the second, Maddi Petrella hit a single to right field and drove in two RBI before the third runner scored from a fielding error.
  • Maine tied the score before the inning was over.
  • The Black Bears tallied a go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Senior Jordan Nastos made her way around the bases and scored on a closely-called wild pitch to even the score.
  • Wendi Hammond struck out two batters as the Great Dane defense went 1-2-3.
  • Mary Kate Murray drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh.
  • Victoria Vilarchao and junior Caitlyn Frederick made it a two-run lead. Taking advantage of Vilarchao's single through the left side, Frederick rounded third base before sliding into home for the run.
  • Retiring each of the first three batters, the Great Danes secured the 6-4 game-one win.

KEY STATS
  • Three Great Danes led with two RBI each - Caitlyn Mitros, Morgan Petty, and Mary Kate Murray
  • Mitros hit the lone Great Dane multi-base hit of the day with a double. It was one of just two throughout the doubleheader.
  • Sophomore Deanna Grahek scored a team-high three runs.
  • Mitros and Petty led from the batter's box (2-3) while Murray and Jordan Nastos followed (2-4).
  • Allowing just one hit, redshirt-junior Kate Powers pitched the seven-inning complete game. Totaling four strikeouts, she earned a 0.00 ERA, in a complete game, for the second time this season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Starting the scoring early, Morgan Petty and Caitlyn Mitros scored off a single to right center from Mary Kate Murray in the top of the first.
  • As the Great Dane defense teamed together for their second double play of the day, pitcher Kate Powers faced just three batters to end the first inning with a 2-0 lead.
  • Mitros extended the UAlbany lead with an RBI single in the second inning.
  • Deanna Grahek opened the fourth with a single before stealing second to put herself in scoring position.
  • Mitros hit her double through the left side to send Grahek home.
  • Hitting a sacrifice fly, Petty earned an RBI as Mitros hit home plate.
  • Up 5-0 after four innings, the fifth inning was the first in which the Great Dane defense faced more than three batters.
  • Petty added an RBI single in the top of the sixth. Grahek scored what proved to be the final run of the game.
  • The Black Bears left two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to take advantage of the baserunners as UAlbany won, 6-0.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close out their first AE series on Sunday (Mar. 31).
