Softball Splits Final Day in Baltimore

LOCATION: The Diamond at UMBC - Baltimore, Md.
 
SHORT STORY: The Great Danes fell to Wisconsin and beat Niagara in two one-run contests, Saturday.
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Wendi Hammond stood in the circle for all seven innings. Allowing no hits from the Badgers, she pitched a no-hitter.
  • On offense, four different Great Danes notched a single - graduate student Caitlyn Mitros, graduate student Maddi Petrella, redshirt-sophomore Natasha Mendez, and Hammond.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wendi Hammond opened the game with a strikeout for the very first batter.
  • Doing it again, the first Wisconsin batter in the second inning was struck out swinging.
  • Hammond tallied the first hit of the game with a bunt in the bottom of the third.
  • Leaving two on base, Caitlyn Mitros followed it up with a single to left field.
  • Continuing the pattern of three outs in three batters, Hammond opened the fourth inning with her third strikeout from the circle.
  • The Badgers got on base with a walk before getting a one-run lead with an unearned run.
  • The UAlbany defense added a double play in the sixth inning.
  • The Great Danes left runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings but they were unable to take advantage and fell, 1-0.

KEY STATS
  • Maddi Petrella totaled two RBI from a home run to lead to the Great Danes' win.
  • Caitlyn Mitros went 2-3 from the batter's box.
  • In addition to Mitros and Petrella's three total hits, sophomores Sara Anderson and Deanna Grahek each added a single.
  • Kate Powers earned the complete game victory with five strikeouts from the circle.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After tallying three straight outs in the bottom of the first, the Great Dane defense allowed the first hit of the game in the second inning.
  • Caitlyn Mitros opened the fourth inning with a bunted single.
  • Maddi Petrella followed it up with a home run over the left-field fence to give UAlbany a 2-0 lead.
  • With another three consecutive outs from the defense, the Great Danes finished the fourth inning with a two-run advantage.
  • Despite a hit in each of the remaining innings (both top and bottom), the fifth and sixth innings remained scoreless.
  • Niagara closed it out with a home run in the bottom of the seventh but with no runners on base, only one run was earned and the Great Danes were able to end the game with a 2-1 victory.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will return to host Army for their first home game(s) of the season (Mar. 20).
