Binghamton Visits Baseball for Three Game Series

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team is set to host Binghamton University for a three-game conference series over the weekend. Action starts on Friday night as the Great Danes return to Joseph L. Bruno Stadium – first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.

Leading the Pack 
  • Will Feil led the team in a 2-1 series win over Wagner last weekend. The captain batted a team-high .545 with six hits, including a double and two home runs. On Friday afternoon, Feil hit a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the game one win over the Seahawks. On the season, Feil is batting .285 and leads the team in runs (27), home runs (6), RBIs (27) and total bases (62).
  • In 27 games played, Dan Tauken leads the team with a .316 batting average. He's driven in 21 runs and crossed home plate 17 times. He sports a .918 OPS and a .537 slugging percentage, both of which lead the team.
  • Captain Jason Bottari has a team-high 22 stolen bases on the year. That mark is good for third in the America East, behind Main's Rainess (30) and McDaniel (24).
  • Ryan Pittz has been enjoying a solid rookie year, leading the team with a 1.88 ERA. The freshman has appeared in 12 games, tossing a total of 14.1 innings. He's limited batters to just a .235 batting average.
  • Cregg Scherrer leads the team in innings pitched (43.2) and strikeouts (53). His strikeout total ranks seventh in the conference.
  • As a team, UAlbany is batting .245 with a .701 OPS and a .348 slugging percentage. The pitching staff sits with an 8.48 ERA with opposing teams batting .343.
 
Last Time Out 
The Great Danes were able to outplay the Marist Red Foxes, and the rain, en route to a 9-5 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
  • UAlbany Pitchers:
  • Devan Kruzinski and Will Feil led the offense, both going 2-4 with two RBIs. Kruzinski had a triple, Feil had a double, a run scored, and a walk.
  • Will Binder went 2-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
  • Jason Bottari went 1-4 with a double and a walk, adding an RBI and three runs scored.
  • Carson Dunkel accumulated three walks, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Josh Salandy went 1-1 with a pinch-hit single.
  • UAlbany finished with eight hits, six walks, eight strikeouts, and left eight men on base.
 
Scouting Binghamton 
The Bearcats currently sit with a 22-16 overall record and an 8-7 mark in America East play. The team has lost three-straight series to AE opponents, losing 2-1 to UMBC, NJIT, and Maine.
  • Tommy Reifler leads the team with a .402 batting average, a mark that ranks second in the conference. He ranks fourth in on base percentage (.464) and sixth in hits (53).
  • Kevin Gsell follows with a .349 batting average, just ahead of Nick Roselli (.348). Roselli leads the team in RBIs, sitting with 43.
  • Gabe Driscoll (3.90 ERA), Thomas Babalis (4.73), and Ryan Bryggman (6.28) slot in as Binghamton's starters.
  • The Bearcats as a team are batting .293 with a .816 OPS and a .426 slugging percentage. The pitching staff is limiting opposing batters to a .286 batting average with a combined ERA of 5.50.
 
2023 America East Preseason Poll
The UAlbany baseball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2023 America East Preseason  Coaches' Poll, earning nine points. The Binghamton Bearcats, the league's defending champions, were picked to finish in first place with 31 points, collecting four first place votes. UMass Lowell followed closely behind with 28 points and two first place votes. Bryant (25) placed third, Maine (21) fourth, and NJIT (19) fifth. UMBC (14) and UAlbany rounded out the poll.
 
2023 Captains
Will Feil and Jason Bottari will serve as the Captains of the Great Danes during the 2023 season. Feil, a redshirt senior, enters his fifth year with the program – having joined before the 2019 campaign. He has been a mainstay for the Great Danes, playing in 35+ games the last two years. Bottari, also a redshirt senior, enters his fifth season as well. He currently holds the UAlbany single season stolen base record (44) and has more stolen bases than any other Great Dane in program history.
