SHORT STORY: The Great Danes split day one in a three-game series against UMBC with the Retrievers taking the series-opening match and UAlbany coming back for a one-run victory for game two, Saturday.
GAME ONE
SCORE: UMBC 12, UAlbany 3 (6 innings)
KEY STATS
- Freshman Deanna Grahek led with two RBI from a triple to right center.
- Senior Maddi Petrella added an RBI with a team-high .667 batting average.
- Tying Petrella, senior Caitlyn Mitros also went 2-3 from the batter's box.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Retrievers opened the game with a double before scoring a run in the first.
- Maddi Petrella started the second with a single and graduate student Chloe Lewis put a second runner on base after taking a ball to the body.
- Deanna Grahek sent the ball to the fence to drive in two runs, giving the Great Danes a 2-1 lead, and earn a triple before the end of the second.
- A UMBC grand slam made it a 5-2 game in the top of the third.
- UAlbany put two runners on base but was unable to score before closing the inning.
- After a scoreless inning, the Retrievers tallied a second home run to add a run in the top of the fifth.
- With four-straight singles, from junior Jordan Nastos, Caitlyn Mitros, senior Morgan Petty, and Maddi Petrella, the Great Danes added a run to close the lead to 6-3.
- UMBC put the game out of reach with six runs in the sixth inning.
GAME TWO
SCORE: UAlbany 2, UMBC 1
KEY STATS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game had a defensive start with three-straight outs for both the Great Danes and the Retrievers.
- UMBC tallied the first hit with a double in the top of the second but the runner was left stranded.
- Maddi Petrella notched a leadoff hit for UAlbany but just like the Retriever she was left on first at the conclusion of the second inning.
- Going three up, three down in the field, the Great Danes took a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
- Getting on base with a single, Grahek made it around the bases to third. Attempting a double steal, Caitlyn Mitros was caught stealing at second after Grahek crossed home for the first run of the contest.
- UMBC added a single in the fourth but the Great Danes held the Retrievers to three batters after a double play from Kate Powers, Grahek, and Chloe Lewis.
- Petrella added her second hit, a double to center field, in the bottom of the fourth.
- After a scoreless fifth inning, which saw two Retrievers left on base, UMBC tied the score in the top of the sixth.
- Mitros opened the bottom of the sixth with a successful bunt to get on base.
- After Petrella walked to put a second runner on base, the Great Danes held base runners on first and third.
- Multiple foul balls later, Sara Anderson drove in Mitros to grab the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning, RBI with a single down the right-field line.
- The Great Danes retired three batters in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
NEXT: UAlbany will close the series against UMBC with a single game on Sunday (Apr. 16).
