How it Happened
- With two games to go in the 2023 regular season, the University at Albany women's soccer program embarked on their final road trip with a visit to their 2022 America East quarterfinal opponent, UMass Lowell. The Great Danes had defeated the River Hawks twice last season, extending their winning streak in the series to three, and their advantage to five of the last six dating back to the 2018 season.
- The Great Danes were held without a shot until the 17th minute, when Devon Schmitt's attempt missed wide left. Conversely, after the River Hawks' first shot of the game in the third minute, the UAlbany defense did not allow another until the 27th, at which point their offense had recorded two more.
- Gabriella Terranova, making her fourth-straight start, held up against a series of three quick shots in the 27th and 28th minutes, keeping the River Hawks off the board. UMass Lowell did break through late in the first half, in the 39th minute, when Calliste Brookshire finished a setup from Hope Santaniello.
- Tiffany Bernot followed the River Hawks' first goal with two shots on target in the waning minutes of the half, both of which were saved by UMass Lowell goalkeeper Taylor Burgess. The Great Danes headed into the break trailing by the same final score, 1-0.
- Apart from the score, UMass Lowell's biggest first-half advantage came on corner kicks, drawing four to UAlbany's one. Shots were largely even, with the River Hawks holding a small advantage, 8-6.
- For the third time in her last three games, Selma Elverum netted another goal, bringing her season total to six. On Sunday, in the 53rd minute, she caught a slow roller from Olivia Piraino deep in the UMass Lowell box. Piraino had pulled Burgess out of position for Elverum to give the ball the final push over the line to tie the game at one.
- UMass Lowell countered just a few minutes later, in the 62nd minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the UAlbany box in the immediate aftermath of one of the River Hawks' five total corner kicks. Santaniello put away a setup from Chloe Layne to put UMass Lowell back on top.
- UMass Lowell's defense held UAlbany without a shot from the 67th minute to the 90th, when Hailey Hnis' last-ditch effort sailed wide right with 20 seconds remaining in the game. The effort kept the Great Danes off the board and gave the River Hawks the 2-1 victory.
- UMass Lowell finished the game outshooting UAlbany 17-10 overall, including 9-4 in the second half. The teams combined to commit 30 fouls over the course of 90 minutes, and all six yellow cards in the match were assessed in the second half.
Next: UAlbany hosts Vermont for its regular season finale and Senior Night on October 26.
