Head Coach Sade Ayinde: "Today was not our day. Siena showed up ready to compete from the first whistle and they made the game very hard. Hopefully we are able to learn and grow from this game as we look to bounce back against a very good Lowell side this Sunday."
How it Happened
- The Great Danes renewed their rivalry with Siena Thursday night, hosting the Saints at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. UAlbany was 2-0-2 against Siena in the last four games, with the two ties coming in back-to-back seasons, in the spring and fall of 2021, both of which ended 1-1.
- Kicking proceedings off early, Sahara Zingano ripped a shot just 90 seconds into the game, a preview of the barrage both goalkeepers would face over the course of the next 90 minutes. Siena quickly drew a corner kick just over 30 seconds later and recorded their shot in the same attempt.
- Siena's Cora Keohane served the ball into the UAlbany box towards Annie Bagnall, who volleyed her shot into the back of the net to put the Saints up 1-0 in the 22nd minute. Seven-and-a-half minutes later, Bagnall found herself open high in the UAlbany box after passes from Micaiah Croce and Danielle Borrino found their way to her, and she scored her second goal of the game to give the Saints a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute.
- UAlbany and Siena combined to take 26 shots in the first half, with the Saints holding a narrow 14-12 edge. Just six of the 26, however, were on target.
- UAlbany's torrid shot pace increased after halftime, and Siena could not keep up, finishing the half on a 16-3 deficit against the Great Danes.
- In one sequence in the 73rd minute, UAlbany had its best opportunity to net a goal from the field. The Great Danes drew a corner kick, and, in order, saw Ashley Ladner, Sophia DeMura, and Selma Elverum take shots. The first two caught Siena goalkeeper Angela Fini out of position but she was backed up by her defense. Elverum's was blocked before it reached the goal and rebounded out for another UAlbany corner kick.
- On the ensuing corner kick, Siena committed a handball in their defensive box, setting up a UAlbany penalty kick. Marisa Tava stepped up to take the attempt and beat Fini left to put UAlbany on the board with just over 17 minutes remaining in the game.
- Siena was able to hold on after the PK and secure the 2-1 victory, holding UAlbany without a goal from the field despite the significant shot disparity in the second half. For the Saints, it was their first victory in the series in the last four games, with their last win coming in the 2016 season.
- UAlbany's 28 shots in the game were its second-highest total of the season, just one below its season-high 29 against Rider.
Next: UAlbany hosts preseason America East favorite UMass Lowell on September 25.
