Ending UMBC's 13-Game Win Streak, Softball Splits Doubleheader

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes opened conference play with a victory to end UMBC's 13-game win streak. The Retrievers followed with the second-game win, Saturday.
 
GAME ONE
 
SCORE: UAlbany 3, UMBC 2
 
KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Katie Falotico and junior Maddi Petrella each tallied a home run for a single RBI.
  • Falotico led the team with two hits.
  • Freshman Caitlyn Frederick scored the third run of the contest.
  • Redshirt-senior Briana Garrett pitched a complete game, notching five strikeouts.
  • Overall, the Great Danes left just one runner on base. Each runner who was on base because of a hit scored a run.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first four innings, the Great Danes were unable to get on base. 
  • After leaving two Retrievers on base in the first, the defense compiled three-straight outs to close the second inning. The third inning saw two UMBC base runners but neither were left on base as both were caught out before they could cross home.
  • Katie Falotico tallied the Great Danes' first hit as her ball sailed over the fence for a home run in the fifth inning.
  • In both the fifth and sixth innings, the Retrievers left runners on base but were unable to tie the game. 
  • Maddi Petrella extended UAlbany's lead as her first hit of the game followed the path of Falotico's over the right-field fence. 
  • Just after Petrella's homer, Falotico got on base with her second hit of the day. Pinch-running, Caitlyn Frederick made it home to give the Great Danes a 3-0 lead.
  • The Retrievers closed the lead with two runs but were unable to tie the score or take the lead, and UAlbany finished with a 3-2 win.

SCORE: UMBC 6, UAlbany 3
 
KEY STATS
  • Senior Alexis Phillips notched the sole multi-base hit for the Great Danes - a triple.
  • Two seniors - Phillips and Lové Drumgole - combined for the two RBI and one apiece.
  • Four different Great Danes tallied a hit - junior Caitlyn Mitros, Phillips, Drumgole, and senior Maranda Jimenez.
  • Overall, three of UAlbany's four base runners scored.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Caitlyn Mitros opened the game with a single from a bunt. 
  • Alexis Phillips followed up with her triple, leading Mitros home from third for an RBI.
  • Phillips extended the Great Danes' lead after scoring on a passed ball.
  • UMBC took a 4-2 lead after the bottom of the first inning.
  • With Maranda Jimenez on base, Lové Drumgole singled to drive Jimenez across home and close the Retrievers' lead to 4-3 in the second inning.
  • UMBC extended its lead with a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth. 
  • The Great Danes held off an extra base runner in the fifth and left one on base in the sixth but were unable to earn the win and fell, 6-3.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close the series against the Retrievers with a single game on Sunday (April 3).
