Softball Splits Home Opener

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes began the day with an extra-inning loss but a two-run homer from Sierra Fretz led to a game-two victory, Saturday.
 
GAME ONE
 
SCORE:
Colgate 2, UAlbany 1
 
KEY STATS
  • The Great Danes outhit the Raiders, 10-5.
  • Junior Wendi Hammond led with three hits, including the lone multi-base hit of the game, while graduate student Katie Falotico followed with two.
  • Senior Alexis Phillips drove in the lone run, scored by Hammond.
  • In the circle, Hammond pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders started hitting right away, getting their leadoff batter on base with a single.
  • Junior Caitlyn Mitros repeated this action for the Great Danes, tallying a single to lead off the home team.
  • After notching three-straight outs in the second, UAlbany left one on base before the end of the inning.
  • Wendi Hammond's double began the third but the Raiders threw her out at home to halt the advance.
  • After four scoreless innings, Colgate crossed home to take a 1-0 in the top of the fifth.
  • With Hammond on third base, Alexis Phillips hit a single to left field for an RBI to tie the score. 
  • UAlbany compiled three-straight outs, including two strikeouts, in the top of the sixth.
  • As neither team was able to score in the sixth and seventh innings, an eighth inning began.
  • Colgate began the extra inning with a home run to take the lead.
  • As the Great Danes were unable to tie the score, the Raiders took the game-one win, 2-1.

  • Senior Lové Drumgole led the Great Danes with two hits, including a double.
  • Katie Falotico, a double, and freshman Sierra Fretz, a home run, notched multi-base hits for UAlbany.
  • Three of the Great Danes' four hits were multi-base hits.
  • Fretz's homer led to two RBI for the rookie.
  • Redshirt-senior Briana Garrett pitched for a complete-game win; her second win and first complete game of 2022.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes opened the game tallying a 1-2-3 inning to head to the dugout for the first time, quickly.
  • Both teams notched their first hits in the second inning. The Raiders tallied two but were unable to score.
  • With one on base, Sierra Fretz hit a home run over the left-field fence to gain a 2-0 lead for the Great Danes.
  • Briana Garrett opened the third inning with her first strikeout from the circle. She added one strikeout in each of the following two innings (fourth and fifth).
  • The Great Danes opened the bottom of the fourth and the fifth with a hit but they were unable to capitalize on it. Katie Falotico grabbed a double in the fourth while Lové Drumgole notched a single in the fifth.
  • UAlbany held off two base runners in the sixth inning and tallied three-straight outs in the seventh to secure the 2-0 victory for game two.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes look towards hosting two weekday doubleheaders against Rhode Island (March 29) and Marist (March 30).
