Baseball Falls In Series Finale Against Hartford 7-3

Score: Hartford 7, UAlbany 3 (11)

Location: Varsity Field in Albany, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (10-14, 2-7 AE); Hartford (9-18, 5-4 AE)

Short Story: UAlbany fell in extra innings in the series finale against Hartford, dropping two of three to the Hawks.

Coach Mueller: “I was really happy with the way the team played today. So many different things affected the outcome of that game. We got some hits with guys on, we pitched out of trouble, there was that play at the plate in the bottom of the ninth that could have gone our way. But these weekends are going to be like this. It's going to be cold, it's going to be windy, and teams are very even in this conference. A few plays can really switch the whole turn of the weekend. We have to keep competing and keep getting better. There are never any easy games in this conference, but there are a lot of games left to be played, and we're going to keep working hard at it.”

Key Stats

How it happened

  • Hartford got on the board first with one run in the top of the second
  • UAlbany took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and no one on, Connor Powers hit a single to right, and scored when Matt Codispoti hit a double through the right side. Codispoti advanced to third when Travis Collins grounded out to the Hartford pitcher, and scored when Ryan Hernandez hit a single to left.
  • Hartford loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth. Dominic Savino came in to relieve starter John Clayton, and got out of the inning allowing no runs.
  • Hartford took the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh
  • UAlbany responded immediately, tying the game at three in the bottom of the seventh when Marc Wangenstein hit a leadoff home run to left field
  • In the bottom of the ninth, with one out and Wangenstein on third, Kenny Hayden hit a grounder to second. Wangenstein was thrown out on a close play at the plate that would have given UAlbany its second walk-off victory in as many days.
  • In the bottom of the 10th, with two outs and runners on first and second, Hernandez hit a line drive to left. The Hartford left fielder made a diving catch to end the inning and end the scoring threat.
  • Hartford broke through with four runs in the top of the 11th, and went on to win the game 7-3

Next: UAlbany will play midweek games on Tuesday at St. John's and Wednesday home against Manhattan before hosting Stony Brook for three games next weekend.
