Albany, N.Y.
- Despite five strong innings by Joey Moore on the mound, and three hits by
right fielder Pete DiResta, the Great Danes fell to Manhattan, 8-5, in
non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field. UAlbany
falls to 12-26-1 on the season, while Manhattan evens its record at 20-20.
UAlbany got on the board first with
a single run in the bottom of the second, as Gordon Madej singled through the
left side to score Brian Bullard. The Great Danes tacked on three runs in the
bottom of the fourth, as Manhattan's Sean Abbate issued a bases-loaded walk to
bring home Josh Nethaway. Madej recorded his second RBI of the game with a
sacrifice fly, while Bullard scored his second run of the game on a passed
ball. After a solo homer by DiResta in the bottom of the fifth gave UAlbany a
5-0 lead, the Great Danes got into trouble.
Manhattan scored seven runs in the
top of the sixth, as Yoandry Galan and Kyle Murphy recorded back-to-back hits
off Tracy before Great Dane relief pitchers issued four walks and hit two
batters. Travis Wilson came in to pitch with no outs and got a double play on a
pickoff on a Manhattan base-stealer. Wilson connected with first baseman Josh
Nethaway, who got the ball to Madej at short to get the first out, before Madej
gunned down a Jasper runner at home to get two quick outs. A line out to short
ended the inning for the Great Danes.
Manhattan got a final run in the
eighth on an RBI single by Galan to score Anthony Vega, who was hit by a pitch
and then stole second to move into scoring position. UAlbany got the bases
loaded in the bottom of the ninth for a chance to get the comeback win, but
relief pitcher Michael Scarinci only needed one pitch to induce a fly out,
sealing up the win for the Jaspers.
Moore went five innings, scattering
five hits and striking out two opposing batters. Matt Jordan earned the win on
the mound for Manhattan, with two innings of work. Scarinci earned a save for
his one-out performance.
UAlbany
will return to action over the weekend, visiting Maine for a three-game America
East Conference series.
