New Britain, Conn. - Despite an
11th-inning run scored by Nolan Gaige that put UAlbany on top,
Central Connecticut State responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to
take a 5-4 win over the Great Danes in non-conference baseball action on
Wednesday afternoon at the CCSU Baseball Field.
UAlbany
got on the scoreboard first, with a single run in the top of the third. Pete
DiResta knocked a single into center to score Gaige, who led the inning off
with a double. The Blue Devils responded in the bottom of the frame, as Dylan
DelaCruz singled and then came home for an unearned run on a UAlbany error.
Both teams tacked two runs up in the sixth inning. In UAlbany's half of the
frame, Greg Muller singled to score D.J. Hoagboon, while Gaige knocked a base
hit through the right side to send Josh Nethaway home. CCSU tied the score up
in the bottom of the inning, getting runs on a balk and an RBI double by
Anthony Turgeon.
The
teams played with the 3-3 score for four complete innings until UAlbany broke
the tie in the top of the 11th. Gaige was hit by a pitch to start
the inning before stealing second. He then advanced to third on a groundout
before coming home on a single by Adam Mund, giving the Great Danes the one-run
lead. CCSU was able to get two runs across the plate, however, to take the win.
Danny Hickey hit a single up the middle to score Turgeon, who led off with a
double, before coming home himself on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Wells to end the
game.
UAlbany
recorded 12 hits in the game, led by Hoagboon, who went 4-for-5 on the day.
Gaige and Mike Tirri finished with two hits apiece. Turgeon and DelaCruz led
CCSU with three hits apiece, while J.P. Sportman added two hits and scored a
run.
Starter
Austin Chase went seven innings on the mound for the Great Danes, striking out
two. Reliever Greg Lutton tossed four scoreless innings, scattering just four
hits. Ryan White took the loss on the mound in two thirds of an inning. Tom
Coughlin earned the win for CCSU (4-5), throwing the final two innings for the
Blue Devils, scattering three hits and issuing one strikeout. Starter Harry
Glynne fanned three in two innings of work.
UAlbany
(4-8) will return to action over the weekend at the Red Storm Baseball
Tournament. The Great Danes will take on the hosts, St. John's, on Friday and
Saturday, and will also play two games against Holy Cross, on Saturday and
Sunday.
