New Britain, Conn. - Mitch Wells hit a two-run single in the seventh inning and reliever Dave Krasnowiecki picked up the win in relief, as Central Connecticut State rallied for a 9-8 victory over UAlbany on Wendesday, March 17 at CCSU Baseball Field.
Central Connecticut State (1-4) reversed a 7-6 deficit with a three-run seventh. Anthony Scialdone, who totaled two hits and two runs, led off with a double before designated hitter Pat Epps walked. Wells, a sophomore infielder, later singled through the right side to put his team ahead. Sean Miller-Jones would score Wells with a much-needed insurance run on an infield single.
UAlbany (0-10) closed the gap to 9-8 in the eighth as freshman Brian Bullard had one of his three hits to start the inning. He would later come across on Pete DiResta's run-scoring ground out. Krasnowiecki, who went 2 2/3 innings on the mound, ended the uprising by striking out Brendan Rowland with runners on second and third. Krasnowiecki, a 6-foot-2 left-handeder, sent the Great Danes down in order in the ninth.
Central Connecticut State struck first, scoring three runs in the opening frame. After a walk and a single to lead off the inning, the Blue Devils scored a pair on a double by Epps. The junior came home on first baseman Tommy Meade's double. CCSU added another run in the second as Kyle Zarotney led off with a double and was able to make it home before the Great Danes caught Sean Allaire stealing second.
UAlbany scored three times in the third to pull within 4-3. Nolan Gaige reached on a fielder's choice before DiResta and Rowland recorded hits to chase across the first two runs. DiResta's two-bagger sent Gaige home, while Rowland recorded a triple to plate DiResta. Pete Eichner added a sacrifice fly.
After the Blue Devils moved out to a 5-3 lead, UAlbany drew even in the fifth and went ahead in the sixth. Eichner tied the contest at five apiece with his second home run of the season, a solo blast that sailed over the right field fence. Designated hitter Mike Tirri put his team in front, 6-5, by leading off the sixth with a home run.
Rowland went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs for the Great Danes, who return to action this weekend by visiting St. John's for a three-game series.
