Albany,
N.Y. ? Andy Drexel went five-for-six with six runs batted in to lead Hartford
to a doubleheader sweep of UAlbany in the two teams' opening series of America
East Conference baseball action on Saturday, April 5 at Varsity Field. The
Hawks took the opener 11-10 and downed the Great Danes 12-5 in the nightcap.
In game one, each team tallied six runs
through three innings. With one out in the top of the first, Matt Walker recorded
a two-run double down the right field line. Two batters later, Drexel plated Walker with a double of
his own. The Great Danes responded in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
Senior Mike Konstanty started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center to
plate sophomore Brendan Rowland. Junior Ryan Gugel followed with a groundout to
knock in classmate Sean Donovan, while Tom Zink capped the frame's scoring with
an RBI single. The Great Danes added three more runs in the second inning. Zac
Halloran and Rowland doubled around an out for the first run. Two batters
later, junior Dave West drilled a two-run homer to left. However, the Hawks
answered back with three runs in the third inning. With two away, Drexel
singled down the left field line to score Walker
from second. Hartford
added two unearned runs on a dropped fly ball to right.
Hartford (8-12, AE 2-0) scored two runs in
the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. Simon Kudernatsch doubled and Ben Sobocinski
singled to lead off the inning. Kudernatsch scored on a throwing error and
Sobocinski later came around on a groundout. UAlbany evened the score with a
run in each of the fourth and fifth innings as Rowland led off the fourth with
a solo homer and Zink scored after being hit by a pitch, stealing second and scoring
on a single by Halloran. Hartford
regained the lead in the eighth as Adam Bowser blasted a solo homer to left.
The Great Danes tallied a run in their half of the eighth to knot the score when
Donovan scored from second on an error. The Hawks went ahead for good with a
pair of runs in the ninth inning. With two outs in the inning, Sobocinski laced
a shot through the right side to drive in pinch runner Jason Freethey and
Kudernatsch. Rowland closed the gap to one with two outs with his second homer
of the contest, but Kyle Perry closed out the frame with a groundout.
In game two, UAlbany (4-21-1, AE
0-2) jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Rowland and Konstanty
walked around a pair of strikeouts, Gugel doubled the duo home with a ball to
right center. The Hawks answered back in the second to take a 3-2 advantage.
Drexel followed a lead-off single by Mike Amendola with a two-run blast to
right field. Adam Grap walked and later scored on a groundout to put the Hawks
up. UAlbany knotted the scored in the home half of the frame as Donovan singled
up the middle with two outs to drive in Halloran.
Hartford plated a run in the fourth and eight
in the fifth to blow the game open. Drexel doubled to lead off the fourth and
came in on a single up the middle by Kudernatsch. In the fifth, the Hawks
scored eight runs on eight hits to take a 12-3 lead. With the bases loaded,
Drexel doubled to left center for the first two runs of the frame. After a
single to reload the bases, Kudernatsch lifted a sac fly to center to knock in
Amendola. Pinch hitter Drew Sgro followed with a run-scoring single through the
right side, Sobocinski plated a run with a double, Bowser knocked in a pair
with a single and Walker
singled through the right side for the final run of the inning. The Great Danes
scored twice in the sixth inning, but could not narrow the gap any closer. Zink
doubled down the left field line to start the frame and scored on an errant
throw. Donovan later drew a walk with the bases filled to force in a run.
Sean Gregory took the loss in game
one, yielding three runs on six hits over 3.2 innings of relief. Perry recorded
the win for the Hawks, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 3.2 innings.
Cory Warrings suffered the loss in game two, giving up six runs (five earned)
in four innings. Chris Greiner picked up the win, allowing five runs in 5.1
innings.
The Great Danes and the Hawks
complete their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
