Vestal, N.Y
? Tom Baileys homered and drove in four runs to lead Binghamton to a 13-10 win
over UAlbany in America East Conference baseball action on Sunday, April 20 at
Varsity Field.
UAlbany (9-28-1, AE 4-8) struck
first with a single run in the third inning. Freshman second baseman Kyle Crean
doubled to lead off the frame and came around to score two batters later as
sophomore Brendan Rowland reached on an error. The Great Danes added four runs
in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Junior left fielder Gary
Pitcheralle drilled a two-run homer after Crean was hit by a pitch. Rowland
followed with a single through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt by junior shortstop Sean Donovan. After a wild pitch allowed Rowland to
move to third, Ryan Breier singled through the right side to plate Rowland. Two
batters later, senior first baseman Mike Konstanty singled to left to score
Breier.
Binghamton (14-21, AE 7-5) answered back with
three runs in the bottom of the frame. Peter Bregartner scored the first run on
a wild pitch, after walking and advancing to third on consecutive singles by
Ryan James and Joe Charron. Two batters later, Ryan Holley grounded out to
knock in James and Ken Jacobi followed with a double to left center to drive in
Charron. In the sixth, the Bearcats cut their deficit to 5-4 on a two-out
single by James to score C.J. Lukaszewski, who led off the inning with a
double.
The Great Danes got the run back in
the top of the seventh. Junior catcher Ryan Gugel was hit by a pitch and
Konstanty doubled to start the frame. After a pitching change, Gugel scored on
a wild pitch. The Bearcats responded in the home half of the inning with four
runs to go ahead 8-6. Baileys hit a one-out, pinch-hit two-run homer to left
field to knot the score at six. After an out and a single, Corey Taylor
launched a two-run shot to left center.
UAlbany retook the lead with three
runs in the top of the eighth. After loading the bases on singles by
Pitcheralle and Rowland and a walk to Donovan, Pitcheralle came home on a balk.
Gugel followed with a two-run single to left field to drive in Rowland and
Donovan.
The Bearcats scored five times in
the bottom of the eighth to deliver the victory. Holley singled to center to
score Charron, who drew a one-out walk, with the first run of the inning. After
a wild pitch, Baileys singled up the middle to knock in Holley and Kyle Klee,
who reached on a single. Following a walk and a UAlbany pitching change,
Lukaszewski plated Baileys with a single down the left field line. Brian Ivan
caped the scoring as he crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Great Danes
attempted a rally in the ninth, but Bearcat reliever Greg Lane closed out the contest by
inducing a fly out. Pitcheralle scored his third run of the contest after
reaching base with two outs on an error, stealing second and scoring on a
single through the right side by Rowland.
Junior Nate Novak took the loss for
the Great Danes, allowing five runs on three hits, while recording one out.
Matt Simone picked up the win in relief for the Bearcats, striking out two of
the three batters he faced. UAlbany returns to action on Tuesday, April 22 in Syracuse, N.Y.
against Le Moyne at 4:00 p.m.
