Riverdale,
N.Y. ? Senior first baseman Mike Konstanty had five hits and the game-tying RBI
to lead UAlbany to a 10-10 tie with Manhattan on Wednesday, March 12 at Van
Cortlandt Park. Following the completion of the ninth inning, the game was
called due to darkness.
UAlbany (3-7-1) scored in each of
the first three innings to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Sophomore right fielder
Brendan Rowland and junior left fielder Gary Pitcheralle opened the contest
with consecutive singles. Following a groundout, Konstanty drove in Rowland
with a single. In the second frame, Rowland walked with the bases loaded to
force in junior third baseman Zac Halloran. The Great Danes added three runs in
the third to increase their lead to five. Konstanty led off the inning and
later scored on a passed ball. With two outs, freshman designated hitter Jamie
Liebowitz singled to drive in the first two runs of his career.
Manhattan (3-7-1), selected to finish second
in the MAAC after falling in the championship game last season, answered back
with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Following a lead-off walk, Chad
Salem connected on a two-run homer to left. Two batters later, Austin Sheffield
drilled a solo shot to left to cut the Jaspers' deficit to two. After a single
and a strike out, Luis Llerena doubled to left to plate Ruben Perez from
second.
The Great Danes retook a five run
lead with four runs in the fifth inning. Junior catcher Ryan Gugel started the
scoring with a double to knock in Halloran. After advancing to third on an
error, Gugel crossed the plate on a single by pinch-hitter Jim Gaudet.
Liebowitz followed with his first career home run to give UAlbany a 9-4
advantage.
The Jaspers scored six runs in the
bottom of the sixth to go ahead 10-9. Mark Onorati singled with one out to drive
in the first two runs. Two batters later, Salem
walked with the bases loaded to force in Eric Nieto. After Onorati scored on a
passed ball, Sheffield gave the Jaspers the lead with a single to plate Salem and Dom Lombardi.
After a scoreless seventh and eighth
innings, UAlbany tied the contest in the top of the ninth. Pitcheralle and
junior center fielder Dave West started the rally with back-to-back two-out
walks. Konstanty followed with a single to left center to bring in Pitcheralle.
A strike out with the bases loaded ended the inning.
Junior Sean Gregory got Eric Nieto
to fly out and struck out Onorati with runners on first and second to end the
game.
Freshman southpaw Dave Kubiak
pitched the first four innings for the Great Danes, striking out one, while
yielding four runs on six hits. Junior Chris Ott struck out two over one and
one-third innings, allowing four runs on two hits. Freshman Hunter Moffatt
struck out one in two-thirds of an inning, yielding two runs. Gregory pitched
the final three innings, giving up three hits while striking out one.
Konstanty's five hits marked a
career high and are the most by a UAlbany player since Steve Wyland recorded
five against Delaware
State on March 18,
2007. Rowland, Pitcheralle and Liebowitz
each registered two hits. Gugel, who drew three walks in the contest, and
Halloran each scored a pair of runs.
The Great Danes return to action on
Friday, March 14 in Queens, N.Y.
against St. John's
at 3 p.m.
